Identification (2021/22)

An identity is often thought of as a unique distinguisher and defining it is complicated. It is frequently pictured as a combination of attributes (physical features, beliefs, values and so on) or a result of our past experiences. However, this notion has been made even more complex now that a smart, digitalised city seems to be what we are heading towards. People have dissenting opinions on this, especially when questions like whether an AI with a human consciousness has its own identity starts to arise.

What determines who we are? Some scientists claim we are largely controlled by our genes which dictate our species, appearance and maybe even personality traits, while also revealing who and what we are descended from. Others argue that the environment we grow in matters more than our genes since society and the media have a large influence on how we perceive ourselves.

At the end of the day, do we really know what constitutes our identity if there exists so many theories that can be challenged? Can we still call it the core of who we are when we are almost engineered on a daily basis?

C.R.A.M.: The Prologue (2021)
by Zhuo Zihao (Singapore)

Performance is the sole/soul purpose of our being,
our existence through the
constant cycle of expressing and experiencing ourselves.

We are multi-dimensional,
we are our spirit, emotion, mind and body working harmoniously together.

Wherein lies our origin? Where does it lead us? Why do we move?
How do we move?

Provoked by RAW Moves' theme of Identification, Zihao revisits his decades of explorations, research and reflections to investigate C.R.A.M.: The Prologue.

Overlap (2021)
by Ricky Sim (Singapore)

As part of da:ns festival 2021 In Good Company, Artistic Director Ricky Sim presents a brand new work titled Overlap. Overlap discharges the fragmented 'corps memories' from one's past to initiate a new query into the self. This new work explores new causalities of expression and relationship between movement, sound and space.

"If we choose to only one thing, we may miss another.

Is it better not to centre on any one thing so that we can be aware of everything?'

Ricky Sim

Ghost Call - A short film

2021

A call with no one on the other line.
An accidental call you didn’t mean to make.

Wrongly addressed letters.

Ghost Call explores the idea behind one-sided communication and its effects on a person. With technology making it so easy for humans to connect, what does it mean when that connection is broken?

A collaboration between playwright Nabilah Said and RAW Moves Artistic Director Ricky Sim, Ghost Call is an experiment exploring the intersection between movement, text and the raw emotional connection with the audience.

As part of Media Literacy Council's Better Internet Campaign 2021, Ghost Call is a short film that reflects on online falsehoods.
